Former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader, Sarah Jones, plead guilty Monday to having sex with a 17-year-old former student while in a teacher’s position at a northern Kentucky high school, a decision that allows her to avoid serious jail time.
27-year-old Sarah Jones plead guilty to sexual misconduct and custodial interference during a tearful admission in Kenton County Circuit Court in Covington, Ky., skirting more serious charges as part of an arranged plea agreement with prosecutors.
Jones nervously admitted, “I began a romantic relationship while he was a student and I was in a position of authority” as family members shed tears.
Jones further stated that the relationship began in February 2011 when the victim was only 17, saying that the two had sex and that she had sent him sexually explicit text messages in addition to lying to police about the relationship.
According to Monday’s plea agreement, signed by Jones, evidence revealed that the teen had been in Jones’ freshman English class in 2008 and that she was his peer tutor in 2010-2011 prior to his graduation at the age of 17 earlier this year.
Judge Patricia Summe granted the prosecutors’ recommendation to sentence Jones to five years of diversion but no jail time. Many courtroom attendees expressed outrage that Jones won’t have to register as a sex offender. The diversion requires Jones to report to a probation officer as well as undergo random drug tests.
Frustrated prosecutors stated they were willing to accept the plea bargain due to the fact that the teen, now 18, and his family were uncooperative with them and apparently sympathetic with Jones.
