Connecticut attorney Jerry McDevitt is currently representing the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and says that a lawsuit filed by the widow of a wrestling performer who died in a 1999 accident is nothing more than “a political stunt” to gain mass media attention as the former CEO runs for U.S. Senate.
Martha Hart, the widow of performer Owen Hart, filed the lawsuit on Tuesday in federal court in Hartford, Conn. relating to intellectual property rights.
The suit accuses the WWE, former CEO Linda McMahon and husband Vince McMahon of illegally using Owen Hart’s image in videos and promotional materials over the widow Martha Hart’s objections.
Attorney McDevitt for the Stamford-based WWE stated that the lawsuit and an accompanying news conference was the first time the company had heard from her since she settled with them in 2000.
McDevitt also stated that the WWE has the right to use its own copyrighted material.
Linda McMahon, currently running for Senate on the Republican ticket, denies accusations of wrongdoing while Hart remains steadfast in her complaint and presently intends to pursue the lawsuit to fruition.
Martha Hart said, “This has nothing to do with Linda’s political career although, that said, certainly as a voter I would think that people should certainly question the moral character of this action.”
